Pay people alot more and house prices go up alot more.

High employment globally has been sustained through debt. That bubble has now burst. I think we're looking at a 5-10% drop in global employment levels if the recession lasts as long as economists are predicting.

In five years time global unemployment will be up to 10% if the slack is taken up by cheap labour, with a 15% unemployment rate in the West. Alternately global unemployment will be up to 15% if the slack is taken up by high western labour costs, with a 10% unemployment rate in the UK.

It will take 15 years to recover and in that time we will need to protect our jobs.

Re: Hazel’s Honesty

Mandy’s diary

Gah! My ears are nearly burnt off. Bepe from the Vatican has been on and he was absolutely incandescent with rage. Apparently Gordon put the screws on the Holy Father to attend the G20 and then went out and announced it as if it was a done deal. “Bepe” I begged, trying to smooth him down “but we agreed, if Gordon said anything the H.F. didn’t want to hear, he was to pretend to no speeka da lingo and shrug. That’s what Sarkozy does, and it works. In fact, it’s probably true – I doubt he understands more than one in five words Gordon says.”

Bepe was having none of it. “I holda you responsible. You sent-a da video of da White Heather Club and da Holy Father, he take-a his multiculturalism vera vera serious, an-da next thing, whadda you know, he’s sayin’ my friend Antonius is from-a Scotchland, och aye da noo. And what is och aye da noo? It is confirmation, agreement, is booked.”

I called Alistair, who jogged over to gloat. He came in, picking his teeth with a flick knife. “Told you not to do G-d” he sneered, rubbing his musk glands on my new cocktail cabinet to try to claim the territory “Brenda will be livid – she’s the Supreme Governor of the church here, you know. Bit of a dust-up called the Reformation”. Yes, I know, I know – I checked the small print on her website - but how was I to know Gordon would start talking out of turn as soon as he got out of giving the Pope an audience?

Ali lifted up his sweat-soaked running vest and fanned his belly thoughtfully so I could see he had a six pack. “Tell the Vatican to put out a statement that a Papal visit is likely to go ahead at some unspecified time, but make it clear there is nothing arranged at present.”

“Thanks, Ali, you’re a pal”

“Think nothing of it, Pete”

Bastard.

I had just opened my new retro-chic walnut cocktail cabinet for a soother when the door burst open. At first I thought it was the wind, but it turned out that Hazel was in the room, bobbing up and down and chittering “I’d love a Babycham”. Yes, she probably would. I poured her some Tizer and told her it was pink champagne. “Ooooh luvli” she gurgled, sucking the cherry on a cocktail stick and being vastly amused by the little ballerina which goes round and is reflected in the internal mirrors when the light comes on automatically as the split-lid is opened. “What are we gonna do, Pete?”

“Well, for a start, my name is Peter, and for seconds, kindly clean my cocktail cabinet as it seems to have something odiferous on it. You can’t possibly have spent all your life tap-dancing on pub counters for pennies without learning a few things about polishing woodwork.” Really, these people.

Re: Hazel’s Honesty

How ever on the plus side harriet is running for leadership !

Re: Hazel’s Honesty

I want to organise a ginger dwarf throwing competition. Unfortunately, however good the soundbite, Labour have shown themselves to be 99.999%lying, thieving cunts that would be so much improved by a close encounter with a length of piano wire. So even if she is sincere, no-one will believe her. Nice try, Sunshine but where were you when that fuckwit imbecile became unelected PM? Looking out for the interests of the British voters? Surely the prospect of Brown retaining the premiership after getting 31% votes versus Conservative 37% would send piano-wire makers' shares skyrocketing.
***

"Using tools provided by UK Poll Monitor:

"Assuming a uniform swing, the following result would give Labour the most seats in a hung parliament, and therefore Brown would remain Prime Minister

Con 37%

Lab 31%

Lib 25 %

Other 7%"

Re: Hazel’s Honesty

Labour is 20% behind in the polls

The astonishing thing is that this difference is so small.

Re: Hazel’s Honesty

Blears says "I don't detect a serious clamour for a Conservative victory...". This point has been made many times over the last year or two, most often by Labour politicians or some sections of the media. The inference is that Brown and his party believe that because Cameron may not be everyone's cup of tea they still have some sort of chance at the next general election.

My guess is that Blears' proposition is probably right, more-or-less; people in general may not be dancing in the street at the prospect of a Tory government. Jeez, who's got cause to dance in the street about anything at the present time? Who's going to wait in rapture for the next government when we know we're in deep trouble for years to come. But where Blears and those of her ilk seem to have a blind-spot is harbouring a notion that because fever-pitch has not yet been reached for the Tories (nor, in truth, is it likely to be), in some way there is still a degree of patience with, or affection, or support for the Labour Party.

And Blears has to be wrong in this analysis (vain hope?). For the simple fact surely must be that the events of the fag-end of the Major government and the gross let-down of New Labour shortly after the heady days of 1997 and super-smooth, plausible Blair; allied to LibDems perpetually lurking ineffectually in the background, mean that in the foreseeable future no political party is likely to be welcomed with open arms - other than perhaps if the welcome may be engendered solely by a some sense of relief - by a battered and rightly cynical British public. Too many people after 1997 learned a powerful lesson after getting prematurely excited, by being a little too trusting, about a so-called new style of politics - 'the new day dawning' - only to suffer growing, bitter disappointment and, now, gnawing resentment.

The disillusionment with a surfeit of dishonesty, lies, sleaze, issues of expenses and snouts in troughs, cronyism, and incompetence is almost tangible. Where the majority of politicians are seen as egregious, self-seeking graspers, who's going to "clamour" for ANY party's election victory. Where's any sort of euphoria going to come from?

And Blears must understand that even if the Tories happen to be dubbed best worst party for the next government, it won't stop the landslide that will deservedly anihilate New Labour.

Remember this bollocks? "It will be a government that seeks to restore trust in politics in this country. That cleans it up, that decentralises it, that gives people hope once again that politics is and always should be about the service of the public"

T. Blair. Acceptance speech 1997.

Maybe, Ms. Blears, No "serious clamour" yet for a conservative government, but, what is it currently, 72% of the country clamouring 'Labour - no thanks'?

Bet Cameron is glad he's Cameron and not Brown.

Re: Hazel’s Honesty

Hazel hates the smell of napalm in the morning......
